Skiing backcountry is for the adventurous, and it also requires skill; therefore, only those who have plenty of experience go in for a ride in the rough. Usually, skiing backcountry means there are no signs to indicate the safe routes. Skiers who are experienced as well as bored with the resort settings like to venture out into a more natural terrain which is far from the maddening crowd. Mingling with the amateurs and holiday crowd can be a frustrating experience. This can force some expert skiers to explore more remote and unpopulated areas where the snow is fresh. 

Since there are no guides or help available when skiing backcountry, it is important to be prepared for eventualities. Proper clothing is essential if one really wants to enjoy the white landscape. Skiing boots are particularly important. In the unknown slopes, this can be the difference between life and death.

The challenges that skiing backcountry present are numerous. There are no lifts or any other mechanical means available to climb up the slopes. Many times, the way is not mapped and may change due to heavy snow. This adds to a sense of adventure and part of the overall experience.

Racing down unchartered slopes is thrilling as well as dangerous. To make things more exhilarating, there is always the threat of an avalanche or a snowstorm. Obviously, skiing backcountry is not for the faint-hearted, and because of its very nature, skiing backcountry is also a lonely past time.

In some European countries skiing backcountry is legal. However, in the United States it is still illegal to ski outside the demarcated ski slopes. Departure from ski areas is also considered to be illegal in many places.

Despite all the challenges faced by skiers, some do prefer to break out and explore some of the most dangerous, unchartered, un-demarcated, wild and beautiful slopes around the world. The beauty and pleasure of exploring the countryside while skiing backcountry, cannot be explained in logical terms. It is a thrill known only to those who fly down the slopes at terrifying speeds and against all odds. There are some clubs that offer specialized services catering to the skiing elite. Skiing backcountry is for those people who consider themselves to be experts, as well as adventurous enough to venture out into the cold. The dangers are part of the experience. The verdict is still not out on whether it is an adventure sport or a foolish endeavor. Maybe it is a bit of both.
